Another First
Sunny woke up yesterday with a mysterious purple upper lip. I'm not usually one to panic, but I did page Buzz to ask him if he was aware of any rare disease with this symptom. He wasn't, but agreed that it was strange when I described what it looked like. I carefully checked the rest of her body for abnormalities but didn't find any. When asked if her lip hurt, she said, "No, not at all," in the sweetest of sing-song voices.
I noticed nervously after her nap that her lip was even more purple and that the bottom lip area was becoming involved as well. When Buzz came home for dinner, he agreed that it was very odd and we discussed whether we should take her in the next day to get some labs drawn.
After watching Sparkle with a water bottle though, Buzz had a thought: "Has she been playing with a water bottle at all?"
We searched the girls' bedroom for a bottle but didn't find one. Then as we were reading a bedtime story, a large white cap from a pretend bottle of lotion caught my eye. I picked it up and sucked the air out of it, suctioning it to my mouth. Sunny looked at me with a twinkle in her eye and giggled uncontrollably.
"Do you like to stick this to your mouth?"
"Yeah, like this..."
She demonstrated and when she laughed and it popped off, the purple color around her mouth had deepened even further...
Our silly, silly girl had given herself her first hickey.

Hilarious. Be glad you are married to an MD who can tell you not to panic. I would have been embarrassed in the pediatrician's office.
You can tell her first boyfriend that you know what it looks like when her lips are sucked excessively - and for him to beware!
