I'm officially making it my goal committing to run (yes, actually RUN) the local 5K this fall.
I've been getting on the treadmill with some regularity of late and I'm actually starting to like it. Who knew? I'm terrible at running. I run about a 13 minute mile right now, but my husband assures me that I will get faster the more I do it. I'm definitely running farther than I've ever been able to*. Today I did a mile and a half before I stopped to walk. Took me over 20 minutes, but still.
The major obstacle I'm facing at this point is finding shoes that work for me. I have ridiculously high arches. I thought that I was on to something with barefoot running, but after a week of feeling good sans shoes, my feet have been killing me... so much so that I didn't run at all last week. Boo! Buzz has a couple of days off this weekend, so I'm hoping to sneak away for a couple of hours to do some shopping minus the kids. Wish me luck!
*I was actually on the cross country team in middle school. It was a mistake, really. I wanted to run track but showed up for the wrong practice because I didn't know the difference. I was constantly stopping to walk and I finished last or next to last in every race except one. I'm still not sure why they kept me.

yay! Just to warn you, running might be addicting...I'm still not very fast (usually 11-12min/mile) but I still love plugging away at it (when I'm not pregnant!) and I've used it as a post-baby workout plan; there's a 10mile race in the twin cities each fall that I trained for and ran after Josephine was born, and one day when I have the time again, I'd like to run another marathon...one day.
Make sure to invest in your shoes, they'll be your most important tool in training. And try to find a place that will watch you walk/run and help you find the shoes you need, it makes a BIG difference! Good luck, you'll do great!
I'm so proud of you!
Inspiring! I am also looking at a local 5k in the fall to get back into the discipline and raise funds for a village in Sudan. My first 5K, my housemates (all runners) decided that week that we would run together. Correction. We would start together and I would watch the back of them until I could no longer see them. I was the last to cross the finish line with the exception of a senior gentleman who rode home in an ambulance! It gets better.
Shoes can make or break you so I'm hoping for a great pair for you. Best!
good for you! My aunt once told me, when I first thought about jogging, that all you have to do is pick up your feet and you're burning twice the calories. Who cares about speed! I'm the slowest jogger EVER. Ran a half marathon and it took 3 hours! BUT I never stopped to walk- so there. Do it at the speed that makes you happy and forget about the rest!
